What is magnetic paint used for and how to make it yourself?

In order to attach a picture, a photo without a frame or an application to the wall plane, there is no longer any need to nail these decorative ornaments, hold them with buttons or glue them with glue. Magnetic paint applied to the walls, after drying, will create a surface area to which magnets will be easily attracted. Due to this, on the planes painted with such a coating on various surfaces, it will be possible to attach photos, drawings, various decorations on a magnetic basis.

After applying such paint, metal objects can be hung on the surface

Material Purpose

The fashion for removable decor elements, pictures and photographs on the walls dictated the need for a material that could hold all these interesting details on the surface of the walls, giving the interior a lively and lived-in look.

There is no magic here. Paints that are applied to the wall area, highlighted by decorating with illustrative materials, drawings of children, contain iron particles. Often this building material is also called magnetic soil. This composition is used for coating surfaces:

  • concrete
  • plywood sheets
  • wooden surface of boards,
  • fiberboard painting, Particleboard, GVL, GKL.

After applying iron-containing soil, the surface treated by it acquires magnetic properties. Due to this, magnets are attracted to the wall plane and easily held on it.

This paint can be used to create magnetic sections of walls:

  • in cafes and personal workplaces in offices and offices of various organizations;
  • kindergartens and schools (to cover the board, designed to demonstrate visual educational material);
  • at home (in kitchens, children's rooms).

A primer having magnetic properties can be wallpapered, while its ability to attract magnets will not be lost. Such compositions are used as a basis for coating a marker board.

Positive traits

Primers with magnetic properties have a number of advantages:

  • these building materials are completely free of unpleasant odors;
  • not poisonous, so they can be used in medical and educational institutions;
  • comply with fire safety standards;
  • belong to environmentally friendly building materials, do not have a harmful effect on the health of people and animals;
  • have increased adhesion to any surfaces,

Such soils have special properties. Paints are able to muffle electromagnetic radiation from household appliances:

  • TVs
  • microwave ovens
  • computers.

Material application

The application of magnetic material to a selected surface area must be performed in the sequence:

  1. To clear a wall (or any other surface) of all types of pollution.If its surface is contaminated with the remnants of an old peeling varnish or paint, then the particles of the paint layer must be cleaned with a solvent.
  2. Then the metal / wood plane or product can be washed using any suitable detergent. Now you need to let the surface dry.
  3. If there are irregularities or defects on the walls or board, they must be carefully repaired and puttyed. A well-prepared surface should be perfectly smooth.Walls prepared for painting
  4. After drying, the cleaned surface is coated with deep penetration primers. For this, the material must be thoroughly mixed before use.
  5. Primers that can penetrate deep into the pores of the base material are applied in two to three layers, always allowing the primed walls to dry after each coating.
  6. Iron-based paint is applied to the last layer of deep penetration primer.

How to make magnetic soil at home

To make a magnetic slate easel for your children with your own hands or a marker board for an office, a nursery or a kitchen, you can make iron-containing soil yourself.

To do this is not as difficult as it might seem, since it is based on an acrylic primer, in which small metal particles are added.

To make a paint with magnetic properties with your own hands, you need to prepare:

  • acrylic paint of any color (the amount depends on the surface area, 250 ml is enough for the manufacture of one magnetic marker board);
  • sand-free cement (2 tablespoons);
  • metal dust;
  • container for combining ingredients;
  • whisk for mixing paint (in the absence of such a large spoon may come up)

Iron particle paint recipe

In a bowl, small pan or jar, you need to mix 2 tablespoons of cement, the same amount of metal dust and one glass of paint. Mix everything thoroughly until a homogeneous mass is obtained. This completes the process of manufacturing a primer with magnetic properties.

Where to get metal dust? It can always be found in enterprises engaged in the production of spare parts and parts for equipment. Steel dust must be handled with extreme care, avoiding sharp metal particles damaging the skin or eyes.

After this, you should begin to make your own magnetic slate boards for teaching children:

  1. The prepared surface of the board is covered with a layer of soil.
  2. After all the layers of soil have completely dried (the required amount of time is one day), a paint with magnetic properties is applied using a roller or brush.
  3. To make the surface easy to wipe after painting, you can apply a special marker paint.

It is so simple to do with your own hands a budget board for drawing with markers or felt-tip pens, which has magnetic properties. It will help not only in solving small educational problems, but also in the daily planning of events and affairs.

Masters recommend

  1. Magnets will be better attached to the surface of the board if the number of layers of soil is more than two. Ideally, there will be 3 or even 4 such layers. This priming method will help to achieve the best magnetic properties of the surface.
  2. So that the soil does not stain the edges, during the staining of the surface of the board, it is necessary to glue it around the edges with paper or paper tape. After the primer has completely dried, the paper is simply removed.
  3. Before using deep penetration soils, they should be thoroughly mixed so that the composition particles settled on the bottom of the container are evenly distributed.
  4. Apply iron-containing paint using long-nap rollers having a pile of 6 to 9 mm.
  5. After the composition is applied to the surface of the walls, it should be smoothed with a spatula.
  6. After each application of the next coat, let the surface dry. Each new coat of paint is applied only on top of the well-dried previous.
  7. Finishing is done one day after applying all layers of primer and paint.

By creating a wall surface or a marker board with magnetizing properties, you can realize more than one bold design idea. Such sections of the plane can be used for gluing various decorative elements, photographs (for example, in a shop and a hairdresser). In the nursery, such a wall will allow the child to leave notes with daily recommendations.
