What is marker paint and where is it used?

Marker paint is a paint and varnish material that is made on the basis of polyurethane, acrylic or epoxy resins. As soon as the paint hardens, it acquires the effect of a marker board, which is a solid and smooth surface on which you can apply any drawings, as well as write with markers. Moreover, drawings and inscriptions can be erased if desired.

Special marker paint

Such paints and varnishes are used not only for painting walls, but also for decorating furniture and other interior details. You can use a marker board as a movie screen for a projector, since the surface is perfectly smooth and does not have problems with under-tension traditional for such screens. Also, a marker board can become a substitute for a chalk board. At the same time, unlike a blackboard, there will be no stains or dust on the marker surface.

Highlighter Discoverers

Not so long ago, marker compositions were suitable only as an alternative to chalk boards, because from an aesthetic point of view, such paints and varnishes were not very suitable for interior decoration.

However, several years ago, the problem was solved by the American company Idea Paint, whose experts developed a paint suitable for painting walls. The new product immediately gained popularity and found wide application in wall painting in offices, children’s and educational facilities, as well as in catering and hotels.

Gradually, other companies mastered the technology. For example, the products of the company from the Netherlands - The Magnetic Company (a well-known manufacturer of magnetic inks) - are not inferior in quality to the American one. At the same time, prices for Dutch materials are significantly lower.

The average price of a marker ink kit today is approximately $ 150-200 (in ruble terms). One set is enough for about six square meters of coverage.

Mode of application

It is possible to use a coating painted with marker paint no earlier than 7-14 days after completion of work. If you do not wait for the surface to harden completely, attempts to paint something on it will only lead to scratches.

As already mentioned, any drawings and inscriptions left on the marker board are easily erased. To do this, you need a regular napkin or sponge. However, if more than a day has passed after applying the inscription or drawing, the erasing process is very difficult, although it is still possible, so the paint can not be called indelible. Moreover, during erasing, there is no point in zealous, using physical force.

A special compound is released for erasure, the use of which will allow you to complete the task easily and quickly. You can buy a wash complete with marker paint.

Important! For drawing drawings and inscriptions it is strongly not recommended to use permanent markers. For these tasks, a special marker should be used, which is used for surfaces treated with marker paint.

Painting works

Before marker paint is applied to the surface, the walls must be perfectly plastered or puttyed. The task is to achieve smooth walls. Moreover, immediately before applying the paint, the surface should be perfectly dry.

Paint a marker board

Instructions for using marker ink usually contain a paragraph indicating the optional use of a primer. This is due to the high adhesive properties of this paint material. However, the situations are different, and if it is also planned to stain with magnetic paint, then on top of its layer you need to apply one or even a couple of layers of a white primer.

Before use, the composition must be mixed well. Staining is carried out in two layers using a paint roller or spray (if the composition is on a nitro base). Moreover, each layer will require at least 12 hours to dry. This is not such a long time, so the next layer is usually applied already on the second day after applying the first.

Note! The so-called marker paint has a similar composition and can be used not only for processing metal surfaces, but also for painting plastered surfaces. Also, this paint is compatible with putty, wood, glass and ceramics.

The choice of composition

The following are the most popular brands from well-known manufacturers:

  1. Dry Erase marking oil is created using a formula that gives almost any smooth surface a marker board effect. The advantage of this paint material is the almost complete absence of a characteristic odor. And this means that such paint is applicable even in closed unventilated rooms. A couple of cans are included in the Dry Erase kit: the capacity of one of them is 236 grams, the other - 561 grams. Thus, the kit is sufficient for painting 2.1 square meters of the surface.
  2. Sketch Paint is versatile. She can paint not only plastered, putty, wood, metal and glass surfaces, but also water-based coatings (in particular, based on latex and acrylic). The paintwork is packaged in half-liter or liter cans. The average material consumption is one liter per square meter of treated surface. The composition is characterized by quick drying - after about three days (instead of the usual one to two weeks), you can already write and draw on the surface. Sketch Paint is characterized by high density, so only one layer is enough for high-quality staining.Special Sketch Paint
  3. Idea Paint Create Clear is similar in its capabilities to Sketch Paint, however, in addition to paint (a half-liter can), a 400-gram capacity with a transparent hardener is also included in the kit.

Any person who does not even have special construction skills can paint the surface with marker paint. The main rule is to strictly follow the instructions from the manufacturer. It is also recommended to consult with the seller to purchase paint with the desired characteristics.
