Old French style furniture

For decoration in the old French design, surfaces of wooden natural materials with the addition of iron forged elements are usually used. The most modern interior items made from innovative materials (chrome, nickel, aluminum, glass furniture, etc.) absolutely do not fit into this atmosphere, but even artificial materials like wood are great for painting furniture using a peculiar style Provencal province painted in pastel shades.

A wicker armchair, forged cornice, furniture with intricate ornaments and ornate motif fit perfectly into such an atmosphere, in general, everything that contains a touch of antiquity, grandmother’s wooden chair, chest of drawers, bed or chest, proving with all their appearance that they served more than one generation. In principle, it is possible to apply such a style in all rooms of your home, the most important thing is to have the necessary items at hand and learn to age them with your own hands.

Methods of processing and decorating interior items

Furniture with broken-off and shabby paint with delicate pastel colors, through which natural wood, a rough poorly finished base, cracks and spalls are visible - all this characterizes the presented Provence design. If you want to paint Provence-style furniture with your own hands, you need to pay close attention to different methods of processing and ornamenting wooden products. They will not require large investments, but they will look eccentric and elegant, because the aging of interior items, such as chairs, which burnt out under the Provencal sun, can hardly be distinguished from antiques made in past centuries.

Try to create Provence in the interior of your house yourself, taking as a basis an ancient object, and transform it into an exclusive work of art using several of the following methods:

  1. Add spectacular touches of this style to the cozy atmosphere of the room, decorating in delicate pastel colors, use the method of coloring the chair in the old French way - apply a pastoral plot of Provence, draw any animal or bird, flowers or ornament from plants;
  2. Refresh old, idle, dusting in the attic or basement furniture pieces with the help of an easy and effective Provence design process - “decoupage”. This technique involves the selection of a paper or fabric pattern, cutting, gluing to the surface and coating with 2-3 varnish layers;
  3. By adding artificially made spalls, scratches or wormholes, and then giving the surface the impression that it has burned out, rubbed and cracked, it is also possible to age the chair using different staining methods.

Do not delay, try now to take some item inherited from the ancestors - a chair, a hundred, a chair or a chest of drawers, and independently use several available methods. If you wish, decorating Provence is not so difficult. To process the product and create artificial aging, first you need to prepare it, remove all the elements that are removed, drawers and shelves.

Consider several available techniques and concepts for performing aging furniture at home:

  1. Using paraffin and coloring materials, for this we need to have at hand such materials and tools (pastel shades, sponge, fine-grained sandpaper, wax and chair):
    • Place paper or film on the floor to prevent contamination.
    • if there is paint or varnish on the item, remove it with fine-grained sandpaper.
    • then the entire surface must be thoroughly waxed parallel to the growth of wooden fibers.
    • then proceed to painting using the paint in an aerosol can, because it is more convenient when painting cracks and other hard-to-reach spots, keep the can at a distance of about 50-60 cm from the chair and apply paint with a thin layer for even coating.
    • to give the effect of aging, you need to use a sponge to gradually wash the paint with wax, but do not overdo it, because in the end you can erase too much, and it will not look very beautiful.
    • if you have a desire, on the resulting surface, you can apply drawings, characteristic murals of Provence.
    • to fix the effect, cover the entire surface of the piece of furniture with 2-3 varnish layers, it is possible to use craquelure varnish to get as many cracks as possible.
Spray paint
It will be much more convenient to work with paint in a spray
  1. Steel wool in black and gray (metal wool), it is used for grouting and polishing furniture, it can be bought in construction stores:
    • take the old chair again, prepare it for decoration, removing all removable elements, then with fine-grained emery paper we remove the layer of old varnish or paint and paint it with one or several similar shades of paint.
    • parallel to the growth of fibers, we’ll go over with “metal wool”, using it very intensively and confidently, as a result the entire surface is covered with a layer of black soot, take a damp cloth and wipe the piece of furniture, we achieve the desired effect of antiquity, that is, we give slightly noticeable shabby and decayed traces Provence, then go over the entire surface with a dry cloth.
    • we fix the resulting surface with 2-3 varnish layers.
  1. Decoupage in the old French design with your own hands, for this you need to have the following materials and tools (fine sandpaper, acrylic white or pastel paint, napkins with Provence images, scissors, glue, sponge, acrylic varnish, powder to create a patina effect):
    • prepare the surface (again, for example, take a chair), removing the remnants of varnish or paint from it, apply acrylic paint in 2-3 layers.
    • we cut out the selected Provencal style of the picture, glue it to the chosen place, gently wipe the remaining glue with a sponge.
    • when the image dries, being careful, we will sandpaper around the picture to achieve wiping paint.
    • apply acrylic varnish and then powder to create a patina effect in some places (no need to cover the entire surface).
    • we fix the obtained Provence effect with 2-3 varnish layers.

Well, here we have learned to do the aging of interior items in the old French design with our own hands. We hope that everything that we have written here will help you create elegant and original furniture products in the Provencal style and make your home cozy and comfortable. However, to achieve uniformity in design, use various decor items (figurines, vases, lamps, sconces) in a rustic or marine version.
