Mordovia is developing a new protective coating for reinforced concrete

Scientists are developing a new protective coating

The corrosion resistance of reinforced concrete structures has never been their strong point. Given this circumstance, the scientists of Mordovia State University decided to work on the corresponding innovative project.

The work is carried out not within the framework of currently fashionable grants, but in accordance with the target program of budgetary scientific developments of university teachers and students. The work is supervised by graduate student Dmitry Nizin, whose dissertation is dedicated to this topic. The young scientists carried out thorough practical work to assess the performance of epoxy compositions, most often used for the corrosion protection of reinforced concrete products. As a result, D. Nizin established that in many cases such protection is not sufficiently effective. The new substance, which is tested in the laboratories of Moscow State University, in terms of resistance to acids and alkalis should exceed epoxy resin, at the same time it will be more technologically advanced when applied to the surface.

The first laboratory product samples are expected by the end of 2016. MSU will prepare an experimental batch of the product, and after favorable assessments by specialists, young Mordovian researchers hope for targeted state funding.
