industrial espionage

“I’ve been living in hell for 3.5 months,” a 41-year-old man from Brest (Belarus) admits in the courtroom. Maxim is accused of industrial espionage. The prosecution claims that he, along with an accomplice, wanted information on the composition and the full cycle of the manufacture of the paint used for road marking. Information is a trade secret of STiM Brest JLLC. During the investigation it was found that the “secret” was ordered by a citizen of a neighboring country. The Russian promised to award men 1 million Russian rubles.

Maxim stopped working at STiM Brest in 2009, and his accomplice Asan at the time of espionage worked as a supply specialist in one of the construction divisions of the enterprise. We met a year ago at the working moment. Maxim worked for an oil refining company and suggested that Asan buy bitumen.

In 2017, Maxim was contacted by a long-time acquaintance living in Russia. The accused met this man while working for STiM Brest. The customer asked if Maxim had information on the production of acrylic copolymer for road paint. Specifically, the Russian was interested in the stimov material.

Maxim needed money, he did not know any of the current employees of the company, except Asan, so he called him. At first, Asan thought that a friend wants to start his own production.

For information, the men turned to the technologist, but he refused to help. For a bribe of 5 thousand dollars (at the end they agreed on 2,500), the deputy chief of one of the shops responded to them, who secretly told the director of the company. All further actions took place under the control of the police. The detention took place on July 31 near the park of culture.

The final sentence has not yet been handed down. Maxim and Asan are facing up to a maximum of three years in prison for industrial espionage, as well as from two to seven years for bribery.

- Honestly, I could not even think that I would bear criminal responsibility. I thought that the maximum would be fired from work. If I knew that I would be standing here now, I would not get in touch, ”Asan said.
