BASF plans to increase its automotive paint production capacity and will open a new plant in Thailand.

The new plant will be part of the ASEAN Technical Competence Center for Coatings, which was opened in September 2015, and includes a laboratory for product development, production testing, colorization, as well as a small serial production unit.

Car production in ASEAN was 3.8m units in 2015. Thailand is the largest ASEAN coating market, followed by expansion in Indonesia and Malaysia. The plant will better serve the growing demand from the growing auto industry in the region.

Peter Fisher, Asia Pacific Head of Supply, said: “We have been active in the manufacture of automotive coatings for over 10 years, with particularly strong positions in Thailand. This commitment has made us the number one supplier of coatings for motorcycles. Now we are increasing our investments to serve not only motorcycles, but also customers' cars. ”

“Our growth and investment plans go hand in hand with our clients' development plans. With the growing number of automobile and motorcycle OEMs engaged in manufacturing and sales activities in ASEAN countries, it is our top priority to provide a high degree of technical service and increase our local supply capabilities in order to satisfy our needs for innovative paint and coating solutions and products . We will continue to strengthen our presence in ASEAN, as well as invest in doubling the number of technical service specialists in the next few years. ”
