The choice of paint and the features of its application to the roof from slate

There are a lot of various building materials for roofs, among which a special place is occupied by metal tiles and profile flooring, but asbestos cement, which is produced in the form of sheets, otherwise called asbestos cement sheet, is still the most popular and cheapest (from the same material can be made fence).

Slate painting

This happens because it is mechanically strong, resistant to environmental influences, to moisture. But it is not very attractive, spoils the beauty of the whole building, makes the fence dull. Modern paint for slate, which offers the industry for the production of varnishes and paints, can solve this problem.

Advantages and disadvantages of asbestos cement sheets

The advantages of this material are as follows:

  • convenience and ease of installation;
  • ease of repair;
  • high resistance to moisture;
  • high resistance to low temperatures;
  • low thermal conductivity;
  • resistance to adverse environmental effects;
  • durability;
  • lack of flammability;
  • tractable.

The negative sides of asbestos-cement sheets are:

  • ugly gray appearance;
  • water resistance is lost over time;
  • moss forms from the northern part of the building;
  • unsafe for health, as it forms asbestos dust.

Slate paint eliminates these roofing flaws. Painting slate provides the roof with a high level of attractiveness, a film to protect the surface from moisture and dust, and also increases the strength of this building material.

The choice of coloring materials

Gray sheets are used for roofs of farm buildings, but when it comes to building a house for housing, the question arises: “How to paint the slate?”, As its coloring will give the whole building a great beauty. The following varieties of such compounds:

  1. Acrylic suggests that a primer will be applied to the surface before the painting procedure to ensure its durability. Acrylic penetrates deeply, clogs the pores, protecting asbestos cement from the smallest cracks. Because of this, the moisture resistance of the painted plane increases, the friction of rain drops and snow clods on the surface decreases, and accordingly, the strength of the asbestos-cement sheets themselves increases.
  2. Quick-drying enamel is viscous and forms a shiny film. It prevents the influence of precipitation, the service life of such roofs is doubled or tripled.
  3. Liquid plastic (based on bitumen, polystyrene or vinyl chloride) is very expensive, but popular because of moisture repellent and resistance to mechanical stress (such as scratches).
  4. The rubber variety of such a substance is moisture-resistant, elastic, resistant to corrosion (no cracks, peeling or lamination), resistant to wear, has good covering ability. The rubber variety of such a substance should be applied in two layers to ensure the durability of the roofs.

How to prepare for staining

If the life of the roofs is already long enough, then the preparation for this procedure of old asbestos cement should begin with a careful inspection so that the slate paint holds well.

Particularly careful inspection is necessary for structures located on the north side, the northern slopes of the roofs, since they often form moss, which must be disposed of before painting. Remove moss from the roofs with metal brushes or power tools with special nozzles. But you need to do this carefully so as not to damage the asbestos cement itself.

After this procedure, you need to check the integrity of each sheet. If small fissures or breaks are found, they should be covered with a composition of polyvinyl acetate glue (diluted with water), fluffed asbestos and cement.

When all defects are eliminated, it is necessary to clean the surface of dust and debris with brushes and water and wait until it is completely dry. To make the entire plane look like on the day of purchase, it must be cleaned with a car washer.

In order to increase the durability of the sheets themselves and the coloring coating, impregnation with antiseptic preparations should be applied to prevent the occurrence of fungus.

How to carry out the staining process

To dry the coating, a small air temperature and moderate humidity are needed. Therefore, the staining process should be carried out when it is cloudy on the street, the air temperature is not more than fifteen degrees, and the question arises: “How is the slate painted with your own hands so as not to use the services of a roofer?”

DIY slate painting can be done with a spray gun or brush. But it must be remembered that the consumption of the coloring matter generally does not correspond to what is written on the bank, but can be doubled. Paint is applied in two layers.

After the first (main) layer has been applied, it must be left to dry completely (time may differ from that indicated on the package). The second (finishing) layer is applied until a uniform color is formed.

How to color the asbestos-cement fence of the site

The fence forms an impression among guests and passers-by about the owner of the site. Therefore, the ugly gray asbestos-cement fence should be painted immediately after construction or the long-built fence should be cleaned of the damaged layer and a coloring composition should be applied to it.

It is best to use paint for facade work, made of acrylic, based on water. It should also be provided with impregnation with an antiseptic (antifungal substance), a primer applied in two layers in order to increase the adhesion of the asbestos-cement layer to the coating composition, to reduce the consumption of the coloring matter.

If this composition is too thick, then it must be diluted with the solvent provided for such a composition. You need to paint the fence with a convenient wide brush, and the composition itself should be applied in three layers, giving the previous one the opportunity to dry before applying the next.

There is no need for special protection against moisture, so painting will perform only an aesthetic function, which cannot be said about painting roofs.

The pillars, which are also necessary to build such a fence, can be covered with this paint. Painting the fence every few years is not necessary if the coloring matter has been applied correctly.

Thus, we can conclude that the paint for slate (in particular based on acrylic) allows you to make a beautiful fence around the site and provide a protective coating on the roof of the house, increasing the life of this building material. And besides, the appearance of asbestos dust harmful to health is excluded.
