Choosing heat-resistant paint for a metal furnace

The main problem associated with the operation of iron stoves for homes and saunas is the property of the metal to oxidize under the influence of oxygen, liquid and always changing temperature, therefore, the treatment of the furnace from metal with paint can reduce the degree of harmful effects of various harmful factors on its surface.

When choosing a paint, you should pay attention to several indicators:

  • fire resistance, which should be at least 600 degrees;
  • absence of harmful impurities, prone to burning and release of toxic substances;
  • corrosion protection;
  • water repellent properties.

Types of paints for metal furnaces

There are many compositions for processing heating systems; their main difference is in the temperature regime and properties. Among the heat-resistant paints stand out:

  1. Water-based acrylic. They are suitable for steel, brass, copper, iron surfaces, but can be used for furnaces in rooms with low humidity;
  2. Polyurethane varnishes and enamels. They withstand strong heat, and on the metal create a silver layer;
  3. Organosilicon paints and enamels marked KO-8101, KO-8111 or KO-822. These products are able to withstand temperatures above 600 degrees, only ecologically safe components are included in the composition, therefore there is no need to be afraid of toxic emissions during heating.

Staining steps

Before proceeding to the process of direct painting, any furnace (installed in a bathhouse or used as a stove) needs to be prepared - wash off impurities, grease, and remove traces of metal oxidation.

The painting procedure includes the following steps:

  1. Clean the surface of the oven with sandpaper or a stiff brush. This will allow the paint to go better.
  2. In the presence of rust, a 5% sulfuric acid solution is treated. When processing, protect your hands with gloves, and use a brush to apply. The remaining acid should be washed off with a soap solution (50 g of laundry soap per liter of water). If there is no rust, skip this item.
  3. Apply a degreaser (solvent, white spirit) or just wash the oven with soap and let it dry well.
  4. Heat-resistant paint is applied using a spray gun or brush. For greater stability, two or three layers should be made, completely drying each time. It doesn’t matter what material the furnace is made of, iron, steel or cast iron, the process is the same. Before working with aerosol spray can shake for a minute, and then proceed to spray. The mixture to be painted is applied from a distance of 20-30 cm to make a thin layer.

Home Painting Methods

There is a traditional way of updating the external facade of a metal furnace and a potbelly stove - this is burnishing. It requires that after the stage of cleaning with acid the surface is heated to a temperature of 150 degrees, after which a solution of sodium hydroxide is sprayed on top (in the name of “caustic soda” 50 g / l). After this, the structure should cool and settle for two days. As a result of such manipulation, a saturated black color or brown.

An alternative burnishing method is silver plating. This method involves painting with a mixture of liquid glass and aluminum powder. Such a home-made heat-resistant paint for an iron bath stove will last about five years. The procedure itself is best carried out on the street, because the first heating will be a lot of smoke. Processing gives a beautiful silver color, and aluminum additionally strengthens the metal.

Modern organic paints for furnaces create a real shell on the case. After using them, you can not be afraid that the rust may disturb the metal. Heat-resistant paint is not afraid of sudden changes in temperature, as is the case in saunas, and will ensure the attractive appearance of the furnace for a long time. And the staining process is not too complicated.
