Perhaps someone would want to try to decorate their homes with painted household items, but do not know where to start, what is needed for this. For this you need, in addition to brushes and paints, quite a bit - most of the necessary things can be found at home.

We prepare everything for work

Before you start creating an artistic masterpiece, you need to prepare in advance everything that can come in handy in the process of work:

• blanks (any piece of wood that is planned to be beautiful and unique);
• soft pencil;
• eraser;
• sandpaper of various grain sizes;
• paper sheets (for those who work on sketches);
• a set of brushes of various thicknesses;
• palette;
• templates (for those who do not know how to draw);
• paint;
• primer;
• transparent varnish (it is advisable to cover the finished pattern with varnish so that it is less damaged);
• container for liquids (for water or solvent, depending on the coloring matter).

The primer for wood is selected in accordance with the type of paint, but the choice of paint should be taken seriously.

Features of coloring materials

Most often, home craftsmen, painting on wood, use the following types of paints:

• gouache;
• watercolor;
• acrylic;
• aniline;
• oil.

Gouache

In another way, these dyes are also called posterior. They are a dense, opaque mass. It is easy to work with them, but it is impossible to create complex drawings with many shades. For drawing gouache must meet the following requirements:

• easy to apply to the surface;
• do not wear off after drying, do not crack.

In order to keep the pattern drawn with gouache more firmly, water is not used for diluting the paint, but an aqueous solution of PVA glue in a ratio of 1: 1. Such paint dilution allows to do without preliminary primer.

Gouache drawings are always bright, colorful, and the dye is cheap. Gouache is suitable for those who begin to master painting on wood and create their first masterpieces.

Watercolor

Everyone is familiar with the simple watercolor paints used by schoolchildren. Compared to gouache, they are more transparent, they allow you to create a complex pattern with many shades. In order to get a beautiful drawing, watercolor should:

• lie flat on the surface of the workpiece without spots and stains;
• hold on firmly after drying.

The main advantage of watercolors is that if errors occur during drawing, the product can be washed, dried, primed and painted again.

Acrylic

Acrylic-based paints are some of the best, and painting them on wood is not only beautiful: acrylic dyes additionally protect and strengthen the material. Manufacturers of art paints offer a wide color palette for drawing, but it is not profitable for beginners to use them.

Why? The fact is that acrylic compositions are quite expensive, so for beginner artists who have not yet fully mastered the drawing technique, it will be unprofitable to use them. But those who have already achieved some experience, they can create their own masterpieces to decorate the interior.

Oil

Oil painting is recommended for those who have already mastered at least a little how to do wood painting.

The coloring matter is diluted to a working consistency with the recommended solvent (white spirit, drying oil), after which you can draw. But oil paints have the following features:

• give only bright shades (with them you can paint an item under Khokhloma or make a stylish golden pattern on a black background)
• durable, after drying, it is impossible to remove.

Those who have at least a little drawing experience will enjoy working with oil paints, because they can inexpensively and for a long time decorate the interior of living rooms.

Aniline

Aniline-based coloring materials are increasingly found in the interior of houses, they paint wooden walls or small decorative objects, and in rural areas craftsmen decorate their houses with them. Aniline dyes have a number of positive qualities:

1. They are easy to draw.
2. With them you can get many beautiful shades.
3. They are inexpensive.

But they quickly fade. To preserve the brightness of the picture, if it is made outdoors, it is necessary to cover it with UV-resistant varnish.

Getting ready to paint

Before applying beautiful patterns, the foundation must be prepared. To do this, follow these steps:

• to clean with a “skin”, gradually changing from a larger to a smaller base, to smoothness;
• coat the surface with a primer on wood corresponding to the applied paint;
• wait for the soil to dry and apply a color base, painting the product with the desired color.

After drying the color base, drawing on any technology is possible.

How to draw a drawing

Depending on the skill level, wood painting can be done using the following technologies:

• point;
• using a stencil;
• sketch drawing.

Screen method

Drawing using a template is the simplest one: you just need to put the stencil on the surface, circle it with a soft pencil, and you can colorize it. You can make a stencil yourself by copying any picture you like or asking to make a template of a familiar artist.

Point method

The point technique also helps to create beautiful things for those who do not have artistic skills. The point method is to draw a lot of landmarks in the sketch drawing and copy as accurately as possible from the selected sketch onto the surface to be painted.

The point method of drawing requires some skills. But maybe it’s worth recalling how, in childhood, numbers were connected by lines, and some kind of silhouette turned out? The point method of painting is based on this, and the more points are transferred, the more accurate will be the correspondence to the selected picture, which then will only be painted.

The point method of transferring the picture to the base allows you to create artistic masterpieces for those who have almost no drawing skills. Simply copy one or more drawings with a soft pencil and colorize. It can be done as it was in the original, but it is better to show imagination and choose your own colors.

According to the sketches

This technique implies free creativity when a sketch is drawn, and then transferred to the base and painted. Sketches can be both elements of a picture (for artists), and any geometric elements (for those who do not know how to professionally draw). Using sketches, you can come up with your own unique pattern for drawing, and it doesn’t matter what is used: geometric shapes, floral elements or free professional creativity.

It is recommended to varnish the finished and dried masterpiece for durability. The base of the varnish, like the base of the primer, is selected in accordance with the dye. After the varnish has dried, the painted product can be used.
