How to process a larch terrace board

Any wooden product located outdoors is exposed to aggressive environmental influences. First of all, we are talking about moisture and sunlight. Excessive moisture, as well as excessive dryness, gradually destroys the material. Therefore, in order to extend the life of wood products, special compositions are used.

Coating the terrace board

Ways to protect wood

Currently, the most popular method of protective treatment of wood is to impregnate it with oil. Oil penetrates into any, even the smallest cracks, as a result of which all areas of the wooden product gain water resistance. The tendency of the oil to polymerize (an oxidative reaction under the influence of air) gives the wood strength even in contact with sea water. The oil is able to prevent the processes of decay and the formation of mold, and also protects the tree from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation.

Treated Terrace

Another advantage of oil compositions is that they do not change the natural color of wood (in the absence of pigments), and also do not violate its natural texture. The processed wood retains its original appearance, but at the same time acquires a deep matte shade or glossy shine.

Processing of a wooden floor, porch, terrace or porch can be carried out not only with oil, but also, for example, with varnish. However, this material has a significant drawback - air tightness. In addition, the protective airtight film is damaged over time, as a result of which the wood becomes unprotected against negative environmental influences.

In contrast to other paints and varnishes, the oil does not form an impermeable film. The oil composition penetrates deep into the woody structure and protects the material not only from the outside, but also from the inside, while leaving the pores open. Thus, the tree impregnated with a protective liquid does not stop receiving air from the outside. It should also be noted that the oil film is very plastic and, with temperature fluctuations, can change in volume without peeling off the surface and without causing cracks to form on it.

Decking processing

Antiseptic compounds are used to protect against biological factors. Antiseptics are non-leachable (produced on the basis of oily organics) and leachable (water base). Oil formulations are usually used in conjunction with a primer antiseptic. First, a primer is applied to the board, and then oil is impregnated.

Oil Applications

Terrace oil can be used to process any wooden products located on the street: porch, garden furniture, outdoor parquet, a variety of flooring, as well as moorings. The technology of surface preparation and application of oil, time for drying wood, the recommended number of layers - all of these parameters can vary. The specific processing conditions depend on factors such as the manufacturing company, climatic conditions, and the type of wood (for example, larch tolerates moisture better than pine).

Note! Processing of a wooden product must be carried out without delay - immediately after its commissioning.

The oils may contain such components:

  • natural wax;
  • antibacterial agents;
  • colorants (pigmenting substances);
  • additives with anti-slip effect.

The presence of certain components in the compositions is dictated by their purpose. For example, pigmenting additives are present in tinting oils, and additives with anti-slip properties are used in compositions used to treat constantly wet surfaces.

Popular brands of terrace oil

There is a huge variety of oils on the market from various manufacturing companies. Each product has its own distinctive features, advantages and disadvantages. Below are the characteristics of the most common oils for impregnation of external wooden surfaces.

Osmo Anti-Rutsch

This oil is produced in Germany. It is usually used for processing the upper part of the boardwalk after the surface is saturated with the tinting composition. Osmo Anti-Rutsch is made on the basis of natural types of vegetable oils (sunflower, soybean, linseed), in which water-repellent elements are added. Additives for water repulsion are characterized by increased density and are evenly distributed on the surface. As a result, the oil has an anti-slip effect.

The composition is used as a preventive measure to avoid mold, rot and blue. Oil is easy to apply, as it does not dry out during operation. Impregnation can be applied without prior grinding of wood.

Technical features of the composition:

  1. It is used for processing terraces and garden furniture.
  2. It is resistant to ultraviolet, temperature changes, humidity, fungus.
  3. It is recommended to apply in two coats (for an unpainted surface) and in one coat - if it is a topcoat.
  4. Drying time at 50% humidity and air temperature at 23 degrees - up to 10 hours.
  5. The material consumption for each layer is approximately a liter per 24 square meters of surface.

Neomid

This Russian-made impregnation is based on natural polymerized oils. It also contains fungicides and an ultraviolet filter. It is used not only for the treatment of terraces, but also for restoration work with surfaces previously previously saturated with oils.

Neomid Oil

The use of Neomid results in the appearance of a protective film that prevents the negative effects of moisture and household chemicals on wood. "Neomid" reliably protects the material from fungus and blue, which increases the life of wooden products.

Before treating the terrace with impregnation, you need to prepare the surface. Preparatory activities include dust, dirt, and old varnish or paint. If the impregnation is carried out to restore the old oil coating, you will need to polish the wood. Hardwoods are cleaned of resin using rags soaked in solvent. Impregnation can only be carried out on a dry surface.

The scope of Neomid is the same as in the case of Osmo Anti-Rutsch - terrace boards and garden furniture. The material is applied in 1 or 2 layers. After an hour from the time of application, excess oil is removed with a dry cloth.

Other features of Neomid:

  1. The temperature during surface treatment is more than 10 degrees heat.
  2. Drying time at humidity up to 65% and 23-24 degrees above zero - about 6 hours (complete drying takes place in a day).
  3. The consumption of material may vary depending on the porosity of the wood and is a liter per 10-20 square meters of surface per layer.
  4. At the end of the work, it is recommended to clean the tools with the help of White Spirit.

Note! "Neomid" is flammable. Work should be at a safe distance from sources of fire.

Oil "V33"

This product is based on polyurethane alkyds with the addition of ultraviolet filters. The special oil formula provides high moisture resistance to wood. It is especially worth noting the ability of coatings treated with "V33" to withstand chlorinated pool water.

Terrace Oil V33

Tips for using "V33":

  1. Stir well before use.
  2. Before processing, the surface is cleaned from dirt, debris and dust. Then the wood is ground. For preparation of an old surface it is recommended to use a proprietary cleaner "V33".
  3. When applying the first layer, the task is to thoroughly impregnate the surface. After 15 minutes, when the oil has not yet been absorbed, the next coat is applied. Then you need to wait 15 minutes. If after this time the material no longer absorbs oil, it means that the wood has been completely saturated and no longer needs to be processed.
  4. Residual oil is removed from the surface with a lint-free cloth. Full drying occurs during the day.

Please note: when it comes to restoration work, there is no need to apply oil to the entire surface. It is enough to process only damaged places.

Trademark "Valtti"

Like oils from other companies, products of the Finnish manufacturer protect wood from external influences. A characteristic feature of Tikkuril is a wide variety of products. In particular, the Valtti line includes three types of oils, including:

Valtti Terrace Oil

  1. "Valtti Standard" is a composition based on organically diluted impregnation. It is used mainly for the treatment of external surfaces. Material consumption is approximately a liter for every 5-7 square meters of area.
  2. "Valtti Aqua" is a composition based on water-borne impregnation. It is made on the basis of natural oils and can be used both outdoors and indoors. Valtti Aqua consumption is a liter per 6-8 square meters of surface.
  3. "Valtti Non-Slip" is a water-borne composition designed to reduce the slippery of the material by giving it a rough structure. Material consumption - liter per 8-12 square meters of area.

Conclusion

Protected wooden surfaces will last much longer than would be possible if moisture and sunlight were directly accessible to them. When choosing an oil composition, it is recommended to take into account the specifics of a particular wooden structure and the nature of its use. For example, compositions with a high wax content are suitable for processing terraces or garden furniture. But when choosing a composition for the room, you can pay more attention to decorative properties.
