Varieties and purposes of iron and lead minium

Iron meerk is a solid and chemically stable substance, characterized by high abrasive qualities and increased resistance to heat. Marmot is used to protect the base material (metal, wood, plaster) from the environment.

Scopes of the Meerkat:

  • production of varnishes, paints and primers;

  • production of fire-resistant impregnating compounds and paints;
  • polishing glass and metal products (used as a finely divided abrasive).

Varieties of Meerkat

In addition to iron minium, there is also lead. Both are necessary for the occurrence of an oxidative reaction, during which a special water-insoluble film is formed that does not allow oxygen to pass through. Finished paints and varnishes are created by dissolving the iron or lead base in a liquid medium.

Lead tetraoxide

Both types of meerkas have their own characteristics and are widely used in industry. The final choice of material depends on the tasks.

Red lead

The lead-based material is an orange-red or light brown powder. The production technology consists in spraying hot metal lead in air or oxidizing molten lead in oxygen. The charged oxide is ground in mills and packaged in barrels or bags.

Lead minium is used as an orange pigment in the manufacture of paint, tinting of plastics and rubber. The material is a strong oxidizing agent and is widely used as an anti-corrosion coating on metal surfaces that are used in particularly difficult conditions.

Moreover, for the purposes of individual construction, lead minium is practically not used due to its high toxicity. Most countries limit the production of paints based on it.

Other applications of lead minium:

  • glass melting: optics, crystal, radiation-resistant and protective glass;
  • explosive production;
  • as a protective layer against gamma radiation;
  • desiccant and catalyst in the chemical industry;
  • Lead Putty component.

The common name of this material is ship or sea meerk. Due to its particularly high thermal and anti-corrosion properties, ship meerk is used to protect pipelines and in the shipbuilding industry. The high resistance of the paint to aggressive marine environments makes it possible to use lead minium for painting ships and other metal structures that come in contact with sea water. The toxicity of the material in this case is beneficial - the underwater part of the vessel is less overgrown with algae and shells.

When working with material, it is necessary to adhere to increased safety measures: wear a respirator and protective clothing, as well as well ventilate the room.

Iron Based Material

Iron meerk has an optimal set of operational characteristics despite the fact that it is more environmentally friendly than lead. The coating is based on a substance of red-brown color.

This material is produced by calcining iron ore in an oxygen medium. In the production process, oxide is obtained on red-hot limonite ore. Next, the raw materials are ground to a powder state in a special device called "screening". Finished powder is packaged in bags or metal containers for shipment to customers.

Red paint

Specifications:

  1. The color of the film is yellow-orange.
  2. The final drying of the surface occurs in about a day, provided that the temperature is 18-20 degrees above zero.
  3. The viscosity index is not more than 80 - 160 according to the viscometer.
  4. The hardness of the coating is determined using a pendulum device and must be at least 0.12 conventional units.
  5. Coating consumption in the range of 55-240 grams per square meter.

Coating is widely used to protect the underbody of automobiles and pipelines. The substance is used to protect metal roofs, sewers, heating equipment (including radiators), steel garages. Also, iron minium is used to protect wood, regardless of whether the facade is or the inside of the building.

Note! Iron minium is not used to protect wood floors.

As an example, paints with meerk content can be cited enamel MA-15. The composition also includes an organic solvent, oil varnish and several additives to give the paint special properties.

Note! Mixing together with silverfish meerk forms an explosive mixture.

Artificial and natural pigments

Dry minium (pigment) is a finely dispersed powder of various colors insoluble in the chemical environment. The powder gains color by adding inorganic powder to it. The presence of pigment powder in the paintwork material significantly increases the resistance of the metal to rust, and also improves its resistance to mechanical stress.

Ocher - natural pigment

In practice, two types of pigments are used: natural and artificial. Synthetics has a rich palette of colors. Natural dyes are made on the basis of natural components extracted from the bowels of the Earth. Natural components are more environmentally friendly and better resist negative environmental factors. Iron minium refers specifically to natural substances.

In addition to iron minium, the following substances belong to natural pigments:

  • ocher;
  • a piece of chalk;
  • umber;
  • cinnabar;
  • pyrolusitis;
  • bauxite;
  • graphite.

How to breed redhead

Before use, dry meerk must be diluted with an organic solvent. Drying oil is best suited for this purpose. Proportions: 20% drying oil to 80% red.

It is difficult to mix a large amount of pigment in a solvent qualitatively - lumps form. According to the instructions, dry powder needs to be ground in a paint sprayer with drying oil to obtain a thick-grated oil paint. Before the final application, the thickened paint is diluted with drying oil or white spirit.

There is a simpler breeding method used by shipbuilders in shipyards:

  1. Fill the minium with water for a day.
  2. After a day, the water needs to be drained.
  3. Stirring the minium, gradually add the natural 100% drying oil.
  4. After a while, the drying oil will displace the remaining water, which must be carefully drained.

To simplify the mixing process, you can use a screwdriver or mixer at low speeds.

Application of meerk paint

  1. Before painting, the surface must be prepared. The base must be dry and clean. If the metal is painted, we remove traces of corrosion, and also degrease the surface with an organic solvent. When it comes to wood, we grind and cycle the material.
  2. Apply paint to the surface with a brush or roller. You can also use a spray gun, especially in cases where you need to process large areas. Apply the paint with not too thick layers to avoid sagging.
  3. If staining is done with lead minium, you need to stir the composition in the jar as often as possible - heavy lead settles to the bottom faster.
  4. After painting, clean the used tool with a solvent. We wipe the brushes with a dry rag, and then soak the pile with vegetable oil.

Precautionary measures

The instructions from the manufacturer contain mandatory safety measures that must be followed when applying the red paint. These recommendations should be taken seriously.

You will need a respirator, rubber apron and gloves, as well as safety glasses. At the end of the work, a long (at least 2 days) ventilation of the premises is necessary.

Alternative solutions

If meerk paint for some reason is not the best solution, you can think of an alternative. Finding a substitute for a meerk is not so simple, especially so that it is competitive in price. However, you can recommend the following options:

  1. Electrically conductive paint "Zinga". This paintwork contains zinc. Paint is widely used to protect cast iron and steel from rust. The substance can be applied to metal in a very wide temperature range.
  2. Another replacement option is fire retardant paint "Leafed through." This paint composition corresponds to the fourth group of fire safety. Coatings treated with Polystyle have been in operation for at least ten years.

In conclusion, it should be noted that neither Zinga nor Polistil will become a full-fledged substitute for meerk. Therefore, if environmental considerations are not decisive, it is better to give preference to paint based on meerk.
