The cellar is a room that is almost always in darkness and damp - for the development of undesirable fungus and mold, these are ideal conditions. Spores of microorganisms spread rapidly, affecting new areas of the premises.

Cellars located in residential buildings are of particular danger - improper operation can lead to the destruction of the basement and the penetration of mold and fungus into the home. The reasons are as follows:

• poor ventilation
• insufficient waterproofing.

Moisture from stored vegetables is a normal process, but as a result condensation may accumulate on the walls and mold may form. Therefore, periodic processing of the basement and the use of adsorbents are necessary conditions for proper operation.

What to do

It is necessary to prepare the cellar for use in the summer, in dry weather. The main steps:

1. To free the basement from last year's products, cans, barrels, boxes, if possible, to dismantle racks and shelves.
2. Leave the cellar open to carefully ventilate the room using natural ventilation.
3. It is recommended that all wooden boards be washed with a warm soapy solution and thoroughly dried in the sun until completely dry.
4. Tamp the bottom of the basement, having previously cleaned it of debris, old sand, crumbled whitewash.
5. Dried boards must be coated with a disinfectant. For this, you can use copper sulfate or lime, or a combination of these substances.
6. Thoroughly process the walls, ceiling and basement of the basement using the same composition as for the boards.
7. Dry the cellar for two to four weeks after disinfection, and only then place food in it for storage.

Priming of walls and ceilings is usually carried out at the stage of construction of houses with cellars. For this, deep-penetrating compositions are used, which form microscopic crystals in the pores that impede the harmful development of mold microflora.

But even such powerful and reliable tools lose their effectiveness over time. Therefore, the walls, ceiling, metal and wooden elements of the cellar should be processed annually.

How to make a composition of vitriol

Copper sulfate is considered the most popular tool for combating fungus and mold. It belongs to the least harmless and at the same time effectively copes with the disinfection of the room. Solution preparation:

• you must purchase copper sulfate - this is an inexpensive substance in the form of blue crystals;
• vitriol is dissolved in water at the rate of 100-150 g per liter;
• the composition should cover the walls, boards, metal structures, the ceiling and pour part of the solution on an earthen base, so that the vitriol is thoroughly absorbed;
• Allow all surfaces to dry well, leaving the basement open.

Combined disinfectant

If you prepare a solution containing copper sulfate and lime, you can get a more effective composition against fungus and mold. It is necessary to take 1 kg of slaked lime, 100 g of copper sulphate and water. First, vitriol is bred, lime separately, after which the two solutions are gently combined, thoroughly mixing. They work in protective gloves - this is a mandatory requirement.

The resulting composition using a conventional brush is applied to all surfaces of the basement. Allow the solution to soak and dry. If there is already mold on the walls, it is necessary to burn it with a blowtorch before applying the composition.

Special antiseptics

A large selection of antiseptics is offered on the market, with which you can avoid the appearance of fungal microflora in the basement. When choosing funds, you need to pay attention to how safe they are for residential buildings, if your cellar is not located in a commercial building. The product can be used for wet and dry surfaces. You need to carefully read the instructions whether the composition is suitable for wood or for cement walls.

If the product is universal for any surface, it can be used to prevent the appearance of mold and fungus. But to eliminate the already damaged microorganism sections of the cellar will not work.

Mechanical processing methods

If mold has already hit walls, planks or the ceiling, urgent measures must be taken to eliminate it. For this, in addition to vitriol and lime, you can use such means:

1. Chlorine powder or bleach, which is dissolved in water. You can apply the product with a brush or spray.
2. Soda with vinegar. The surface is sprinkled with dry powder, and then watered with vinegar. The resulting reaction destroys the spores of microorganisms.
3. Salt with boric acid. For cooking, take 1 kg of salt and 50 g of acid, combine with a liter of water and treat the moldy areas.
4. A solution of potassium permanganate. The composition is saturated, and then all surfaces of the walls, shelving and shelves are treated.
5. Tobacco decoction. It will take 50 g of dry shag, from which a concentrated decoction is made.
6. Iodine solution. For cooking, take 10 ml of five percent iodine per one and a half liters of water. Mold is removed, then iodine is sprayed onto the surface.
7. Sulfur fumigation. An effective but highly toxic disinfection method. Containers with sulfur are put in the cellars and set on fire, the basement is hermetically sealed. Gas kills mold and destroys fungus.

Using toxic substances, it is necessary to wear protective equipment - gloves, special clothing, respirators. It is believed that if microorganisms appeared on wood, then they will not be able to get rid of them, and it remains only to burn the tree completely.

Additional floor disinfection

Before placing any products in the cellar, the base should be poured with a solution of vitriol.After drying, the floor is sprinkled with a mixture of sand and lime with a thick layer, about a centimeter. Substances absorb moisture well and prevent condensation.

You can additionally put a small box with lime, which will be an excellent adsorbent, or use expanded clay, perlite and other porous building materials - they are simply scattered on an earthen floor.

After any processing of the basement, you can not use the cellar to store food for a month. Work must be done in the summer, in June or July, so that the future winter pantry can dry out well.
