How to choose and use the right spray gun for the ceiling?

Painting of ceiling surfaces is a rather laborious process that takes a lot of time and effort. To facilitate the task, it is recommended to use a spray gun. However, painting the ceiling with a spray gun has its own nuances, which will be discussed in this article.

Features of spray guns for the ceiling

The reasons why experts recommend using a spray gun when applying paint to the ceiling:

  1. Automation of the process significantly improves labor productivity. The work that will be done with a roller or brush in a day will be done with a spray gun in 1-2 hours.
  2. When working with a sprayer, there is much less likelihood of streaks and stains, since the liquid is evenly distributed on the surface.
  3. There is no need for a brush, even when it comes to hard-to-reach areas, as with the help of a spray you can process any shape of the surface.
  4. Instructions from the manufacturer are attached to the device. Therefore, even if questions arise, the answer to them can be found on the pages of this technical guide.

This method is not without its individual disadvantages:

  1. Compared to a roller or brush, the cost of a spray gun is high. However, it is worth considering: if the surfaces to be painted are quite extensive, it is better to buy a spray gun than a considerable amount of time and effort will be saved.
  2. To work with the spray gun, the release of paint particles into the environment is typical, therefore, measures should be taken to protect the eyes and respiratory organs.

Equipment selection

The most common mistake when choosing a spray gun is to buy a cheap device. Such devices are usually simply not adapted for high-quality application of paints and varnishes.

When buying dyeing equipment, it is recommended to pay attention to the following points:

  1. The optimum case material is aluminum alloy. The surface should be nickel-plated - this will increase strength and eliminate the likelihood of corrosion processes.
  2. The gun must not have any defects (bumps, burrs, obvious injection defects).
  3. The handle of the device should be comfortable in the hand. The trigger handle must not have any play. The stroke of the handle should not be too tight, as otherwise the complexity of the operation will increase.
  4. The main attention should be paid to the exhaust nozzle: the hole should have the correct shape, and the needle should move freely without touching the walls.
  5. All connections in the device (seals) must be reliable enough: the principle of operation of the equipment is based on air injection.
  6. The location of the tank for the paintwork. Typically, the tank is located at the top or bottom of the unit. For painting the ceiling, it is more convenient to use a spray gun with a tank located on top. If the container is located below, the gun must be kept strictly horizontally (to avoid air suction), and this is not possible when painting the ceiling surface.

Manual spray gun

According to the air injection option, the spray guns are divided into three types:

  1. Manual spray guns.Such equipment is outdated. In addition, manually pumping air is physically difficult, especially when it comes to painting large areas.
  2. Pneumatic inflation. Pneumatics is most used by masters at the present time. The equipment contains a small electric compressor that directs air flow to the gun.
  3. Electric air supply. For painting the ceiling, this is the best, most advanced type of equipment. The spray gun spreads the paint very accentuated, as a result of which clouds of paint do not form in the air. However, the cost of the device is quite high. For the operation of such a spray gun you will need access to the mains.

Self-made spray gun

It is quite possible to build a dyeing machine with your own hands if you follow the simple instructions presented below. At the same time, there is no need to buy any expensive materials. The airbrush can be made of a piece of foam.

Cut an element of a suitable shape from the foam. When choosing a form, we proceed from the size of the paint container. Typically, a jar or a wide-necked bottle is used as a vessel. The foam element should be tightly connected with its lower part to the neck.

We make a couple of holes in the foam. It is best to use an electric drill, as it is very easy to damage the material by making holes in other ways. One of the holes is located at the top of the element. In this hole there will be a hollow rod (for example, you can use an empty container from under the rod for the handle).

We drill the second hole on the side of the structure. It will be needed to install the rod body into it. The focus can be a regular bottle cork.

Ceiling painting

Applying paint from a spray gun to the ceiling is in many ways the same procedure as painting walls or any other surface. The whole process can be divided into two stages: preparation and direct painting of the ceiling.

Preparatory work

First of all, you need to prepare for use the paintwork composition. If we are talking about water-based paint, add the right proportion of water, to dilute other types of paints you will need an organic solvent.

Dilution of a water-based paint for a spray gun

We stir the composition with a construction mixer or a whisk for an electric drill. If the composition is not stirred, it will be impossible to achieve high-quality painting. In addition, poorly mixed paint can cause clogging of the nozzle of the equipment, since even in a newly opened can there are usually dry particles and clots of paint. Therefore, the paint and varnish material should be completely homogeneous after mixing, it should not contain any foreign particles. To remove foreign impurities, already diluted paint should be filtered through a moisture-tight dense fabric.

Note! Aqueous emulsion solutions are non-toxic and do not corrode the skin. Such paints can be stirred even with your hands.

The next step is to add the desired color. Tinting is done in small doses, while constantly stirring the composition. During cooking, we monitor to prevent stains in the mixture.

Note! Liquid paint always looks brighter, has a deeper tonality than has already dried or finally dried.

When painting with a spray gun, the use of personal protective equipment (glasses, a respirator or a gauze dressing) is necessary, since there will be many sprayed particles of paint in the air. It is also recommended to remove all household items from the room: furniture, electrical appliances, etc. Oversized heavy objects that are difficult to remove from the premises should be covered with plastic wrap. Moreover, it is desirable to fix the film with something (for example, masking tape) in order to avoid its slipping.

Safety glasses and a respirator when working with a spray gun

All movable objects and furniture sets are best taken out of the room before the end of work. Cover all stills with plastic wrap.Adjacent planes, the ingress of paint on which is undesirable, should also be covered by fixing polyethylene with masking tape or other accessible method.

Ceiling painting

Painting with a spray gun, as a rule, allows you to get a better result than in the case of a roller or brush. However, the quality will be ensured only with a uniform and thin distribution of the paint material. Precautions must be observed: for example, before releasing the jet, you need to take the nozzle of the device to the side, since the initial pressure pushes too much coloring composition.

When the stream becomes uniform, we begin to apply the solution to the ceiling. At the same time, we hold the spray gun perpendicular to the surface at a distance of 25-50 centimeters. The most suitable ceiling processing speed is 5-6 seconds per linear meter.

For convenience, it is recommended to mentally divide the surface into squares, each of which will be approximately equal to the length of the arm. Next, we paint over these squares one by one. First, we perform transverse, and then longitudinal movements.

The process of applying paint to the ceiling with a spray gun

When applying paint from a spray gun, it is extremely undesirable to linger too long in any place, since in this case the paint layer will turn out to be too thick, which will lead to drips. In addition, excessive enthusiasm for coloring certain areas will cause noticeable unevenness of the coating on the eye. All sprayer movements should be smooth, performed at approximately the same pace.

The optimal number of layers of paint is three. Moreover, each subsequent layer can be applied only after the previous one has completely dried. If you apply a layer of paint and varnish on an still dry surface, peeling cannot be avoided due to insufficient adhesion. In this case, the work will have to start again.

The first and last layers are best applied respectively in the morning and evening, since at this time of the day the room is well lit, and the sun's rays do not distort the perception of color. You can also paint under intense daylight, but in this case, you can not notice a paint defect on time.

Common mistakes

Possible situations:

  1. If droplets of paint remained on the surface, the painting technology was violated - the sprayer moved too slowly. Excess paint is removed with a sponge.
  2. If the layer turned out to be too thick, and exfoliation has been outlined, apply putty to problem areas. Next, we skin and primer the surface. We complete the correction of defects by applying two more layers of paint.
  3. If there are obvious tubercles on the coating, this is a consequence of dirty paintwork material, that is, preparatory measures were not carried out properly. To remove the defect, you will need to apply plaster to the problem areas with sandpaper. Medium or fine-grained paper is suitable. Proper work with a spray gun allows you to achieve staining results that are not inferior to the work of professional painters. The main thing in this business is accuracy and strict adherence to simple instructions.
